Open Source

What philosophy is behind the open source movement? Do you agree? Why or why not?

- individual freedom
- sharing possible

Is there any problem with simply using the products that these two companies create for us?
-- Yes.
--When there are some problems, we can't handle it instantly. If we try to send email to these big co. , it may take weeks to reply.
--If you send a file through a mac book to your friend who is using microsoft, he/she will be so sad as the file can't be opened.
-- Some may complain that microsoft products e.g. Vista contain "bloatware" which means unneccessary software that uses a lot of memories.

Why do some people choose to use open-source software such as Linux?
-- Interesting
-- Democratic: having the rights to re-design the software if you are professional enough
-- Inexpensive: at least cheaper than microsoft and apple

Who owns the right to modify your digital tools? Does it matter at all? Why or why not?
-- tricky one, depends on what digital tools
-- if that is my computer, the right is of course of mine
-- if that is in china, it is not enough to own the computer since the govt. can limit your accessibility on internet
-- if that is the mirosoft or mac stuff, only these co. can help
